Visitor Preparation

What Every First-Time Visitor Should Know

Egypt's museums are among the world's greatest — but the experience is far richer with the right preparation. These are the essentials.

1
Official tickets only — no exceptions
Purchase only from each museum's official website or the on-site ticket office. Unauthorised sellers have no legitimate access to grant you entry.
2
Two-tier pricing is universal
Every major Egyptian heritage site charges foreign visitors significantly more than Egyptian nationals. Make sure you're checking the correct rate category for your situation.
3
The GEM requires at least half a day
The Grand Egyptian Museum is enormous — most visitors spend 3–5 hours inside. Plan to arrive early and give yourself enough time without rushing the Tutankhamun collection.
4
Early entry is dramatically better
Arriving at opening time (usually 9am) can make a 40-minute queue into a 5-minute one. This is especially true at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.
5
Cash remains essential
Cards are not universally accepted at Egypt's heritage sites. Carry Egyptian Pounds for on-site purchases including lockers, audio guides, and refreshments.
6
Heat management at outdoor sites
Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Pyramids involve extensive walking under direct sun. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and at least 1.5L of water per person per site.
7
Photography restrictions vary
Indoor photography is often restricted or prohibited, especially inside tombs and across the Royal Mummies Hall. Check policy signs at each entrance.
8
Verify hours close to your visit
Opening hours at Egyptian museums change seasonally and during public holidays. Always confirm current hours on the official website 48 hours before visiting.
